How to Clean and Care for Wrapped Cabinets and Architectural Film

Architectural film is designed to become part of the interior surface, but it still deserves the right care. Gentle cleaning, prompt spill removal and respect for edges, seams, heat and abrasion help protect the appearance of wrapped cabinets, vanities, doors, walls, reception desks and other qualified installations.

This guide provides general aftercare for architectural film installed by Sunset Interior Solutions. The current care instructions and warranty for the exact product—Bodaq, 3M DI-NOC, LX Hausys BENIF or another approved system—always control when they differ from general advice.

THE FIRST DAYS AFTER INSTALLATION

Newly installed film needs time to develop adhesion. Follow the product- and project-specific instructions provided at handoff. For the Bodaq installations documented by Sunset, the initial care guidance is to allow approximately three to six days before aggressive cleaning or a final adhesion check.

During that period:

• Treat corners, seams and edges gently.

• Avoid aggressive cleaning or rubbing.

• Keep standing water away from edges and penetrations.

• Do not pick, press or attempt to glue an edge yourself.

• Contact Sunset if you notice lifting, bubbling or an area that needs review.

ROUTINE CLEANING

For ordinary dust, fingerprints and light soil:

1. Remove loose dust with a clean, soft microfiber cloth.

2. Wipe with water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner using a soft sponge or microfiber cloth.

3. Remove cleaner residue with clean water.

4. Dry the surface with a soft cloth, especially around seams, edges, sink cutouts and penetrations.

5. Test every unfamiliar cleaner in a small, inconspicuous area first.

Do not assume that a cleaner marketed as “all-purpose” is appropriate for every film finish. Matte, high-gloss, metallic, textured and printed surfaces can respond differently to friction and chemicals.

WHAT TO AVOID

Avoid cleaning methods and daily habits that can scratch, soften, stain or lift the finish:

• Abrasive powders and scrub pads

• Steel wool and hard-bristle brushes

• Scrapers, razor blades and metal tools

• Harsh bleach, ammonia or acidic cleaners unless the exact manufacturer instructions allow them

• Unapproved solvents and adhesive removers

• Cutting directly on a wrapped counter or work surface

• Dragging sharp, heavy or rough objects

• Picking, pulling or forcing a lifted edge

• Open flame, concentrated steam or pressure washing

• Hot metal objects placed directly on the film

Use cutting boards, trivets and protective pads where appropriate. Lift objects instead of dragging them.

SPILLS, STAINS AND STANDING WATER

Wipe spills promptly. Do not allow water, cosmetics, oils, food residue, cleaning chemicals or other liquids to remain at a seam, edge, sink cutout, hardware penetration or damaged area.

For a stubborn mark, begin with mild soap and water on a soft cloth. Only move to a stronger method if it is allowed by the current care instructions for the installed product. Bodaq’s published guidance identifies a diluted ethanol-and-water solution and a melamine sponge as possible options for harder stains, but both require care: provide ventilation, keep alcohol away from heat or flame, use light pressure and test first because aggressive rubbing can affect sheen.

A method appropriate for one Bodaq pattern should not automatically be applied to every 3M DI-NOC or LX Hausys BENIF finish. Confirm the product and pattern before escalating a cleaning method.

HEAT AND WRAPPED SURFACES

Do not place hot pans, appliances, tools or metal objects directly on architectural film. Use a heat-resistant trivet and maintain the clearances required by the appliance and film manufacturer.

Heat exposure is application-specific. A vertical cabinet door, a reception wall and a horizontal counter do not experience the same conditions. If you are uncertain about a heat source, stop using the affected area and ask Sunset to review it.

EDGES, SEAMS AND CORNERS

Edges and seams should not be treated as handles. Avoid catching them with fingernails, tools, jewelry, cleaning equipment or objects being moved across a counter.

If an edge appears to move:

• Stop cleaning or using that area if continued activity could worsen it.

• Photograph the full surface and a close view of the affected edge.

• Note when the condition appeared and whether heat, moisture, impact or cleaning was involved.

• Contact Sunset before pulling, cutting or applying adhesive.

Early review is usually more useful than waiting for a small condition to spread.

CARE BY APPLICATION

Kitchen cabinets

Wipe cooking residue and fingerprints before they build up. Pay special attention near handles, sinks, dishwashers, ovens and small appliances. Maintain required appliance clearances and do not direct concentrated steam at an edge.

Bathroom vanities

Keep plumbing leaks, standing water and wet products away from seams and cabinet edges. Film is not a repair for swelling or active moisture damage.

Counters and work surfaces

Use cutting boards and trivets. Clean spills promptly and avoid dragging equipment. Not every architectural film is specified for a horizontal work surface, so retain the product information issued for the installation.

Walls, doors and millwork

Use soft cloths and avoid repeated impact from carts, furniture, door hardware or cleaning equipment. Commercial cleaning teams should receive the product-specific instructions.

Reception desks and commercial interiors

Document the approved cleaner and teach staff not to scrape adhesive labels, tape or residue with metal tools. High-touch areas may require more frequent gentle cleaning rather than stronger chemicals.

WHEN TO CONTACT SUNSET

Request a review if you notice:

• Lifting or movement at an edge or seam

• Bubbling, unusual texture or an adhesion change

• Water intrusion or a plumbing leak

• Impact damage, a deep gouge or a cut

• Heat damage or discoloration

• A cleaner changing the appearance

• Failure of the underlying paint, laminate, veneer, MDF or other substrate

Send one photograph showing the full area and at least one close-up. Include the property address, installation date if known, film brand and pattern, and a description of what happened.

KEEP YOUR PROJECT RECORD

Retain the signed agreement, final invoice, care instructions, manufacturer warranty, finish brand, finish name, pattern or SKU, installation date and any roll or lot information provided. These details are important if the surface ever needs to be reviewed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I use a Magic Eraser on wrapped cabinets?

Some manufacturer guidance permits a melamine sponge for certain harder stains, but it can change sheen if used aggressively. Confirm the installed product, test in a hidden area and use light pressure.

Can I use disinfectant on architectural film?

Only when the exact product’s current instructions support the cleaner and concentration. Commercial facilities should approve a documented cleaning method for the specified film.

Can I steam-clean wrapped cabinets?

Do not direct concentrated steam at film, seams or edges. Heat and moisture can create avoidable risk.

Can I repair a lifted edge myself?

Do not pull, cut or glue it without guidance. Photograph it and contact Sunset so the cause and appropriate response can be evaluated.

Is architectural film waterproof?

Do not use “waterproof” as a universal description. Film systems and seams have application-specific limitations, and the substrate can still be damaged by leaks or standing water.

Does this guide replace my warranty?

No. The signed agreement and the current manufacturer warranty and care documents for the installed product control.

CARE STARTS WITH THE EXACT FINISH

If Sunset completed your installation, use the brand and pattern listed in your project record. If another installer completed it, identify the product before choosing cleaners or attempting a repair.
